How long does postpartum depression last?
Medically reviewed by Drugs.com. Last updated on Oct 18, 2023.
Symptoms of postpartum depression are usually present for a few weeks before the condition is diagnosed. Treatment and recovery times can vary greatly among patients with postpartum depression and will depend on the severity of the symptoms and individual needs. Once treatment is started, however, many patients will feel better within weeks. Without treatment symptoms can last for many months or even years. As with other types of depression, treatment with antidepressants and psychotherapy is most helpful.
Postpartum depression is not the same as “baby blues", which many new moms experience after childbirth. New moms with baby blues typically experience mood swings, weepiness or crying spells, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, sadness and other symptoms. Symptoms of baby blues last for up to two weeks. Symptoms of postpartum depression, on the other hand, tend to be more severe and last for more than two weeks.
