Rybelsus works for your type 2 diabetes in three ways: it helps to reduce your blood sugar levels by increasing insulin, it decreases the amount of sugar made and released from the liver, and it slows down how fast food leaves your stomach to help you feel more full.

  1. Increases insulin: Rybelsus stimulates your pancreas to release more insulin when your blood sugar (glucose) is high.
  2. Decreases sugar: It lowers the amount of sugar that is made in your liver and released to your blood.
  3. Slows gastric emptying: Rybelsus slows down the food leaving your stomach after you eat, which may help you feel fuller for a longer period of time.

Rybelsus (semaglutide) is an oral pill taken once daily to help to control blood sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It works best when it is used alongside a healthy diet and exercise plan. Rybelsus is not used for treating type 1 diabetes.

Rybelsus has also been shown in studies to help with weight loss, but it is not approved for this use.

Rybelsus Approval

In September 2019, the FDA approved Rybelsus as the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist available in the U.S. for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults, alongside a regular diet and exercise program.

Rybelsus is from the class of medicines called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists. It binds to and activates the GLP-1 receptor. It acts like a natural hormone in your body that helps to keep your blood sugar levels in balance.

  • Rybelsus oral tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient that’s found in Wegovy and Ozempic injections.
  • Wegovy is approved for weight loss and management, while Ozempic is approved for treatment of type 2 diabetes. They are both given as once weekly subcutaneous injections.
  • Rybelsus, Ozempic and Wegovy are all manufactured by Novo Nordisk.
